A distributed system for controlling application of molten thermoplastic material includes a system controller including a network for transmitting information between the controller and a plurality of distributed control modules along a shared bus; at least one applicator for applying the material; and a melter for supplying molten material to the at least one applicator; the melter including a plurality of melter control modules for controlling delivery of the material to the at least one applicator, with each of the melter control modules being coupled to the network; the applicator comprising at least one applicator control module, the applicator control module being coupled to the network; wherein the system controller transmits instructions to a selectable number of the control modules across the network based on a selectable application of the material, and receives across the network information from each control module used in the selected application.
