ABSTRACT A distributed variable-band switching system for speech and data comprises a plurality of nodes arranged along a folded unidirectional bus, each associated with a plurality of ter- minals. Each node comprises two directional couplers, one for transmission and the other for reception, which are com- mon to all the terminals of the node, a detector of the activity generated in the upstream nodes, a detector of the activity generated either in the upstream nodes or in the node itself, and a detector of collision among terminals be- longing to the same node. The detectors are connected to devices which implement an ordered arrangement of the termi- nals for data transmission and make it possible to establish synchronous communication channels for speech transmission.
