ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A press has upper and lower platens. A ram displaces the upper platen toward to the lower platen to apply a compressive force to multiple workpieces. The workpieces may be molds having separable sections that shape contained sheet materials. The lower platen is adapted to distribute the compressive force among the workpieces independent of differences in thickness among the materials. It has multiple separate plates each engaged with a different workpiece. The plates are mounted to a supporting structure with bolts that permit limited upward movement. Hydraulic cylinders are formed within the plates. The cylinders apply equal upward forces to each plate, the total magnitude of such forces corresponding to the compressive forceapplied by the ram. Each workpiece experiences a compressive force corresponding to the upward force applied to the plate to which the workpiece issecured. - 11 -
