ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The apparatus described is designed to distribute freely-falling particles of lignocellulosic material uniformly over the inlet area of an electrostatic orientation unit. Particles are metered onto a conveyor belt which discharges an even flow of particles into a pair of contrarotating squirrel- cage rolls which are mounted such that one part of the flow of material passes between the rolls and two other parts of the flow are directed outwardly from the contrarotating rolls. The three parts of the particle flow provided by the contra- rotating rolls are directed respectively to larger squirrel- cage distribution rolls located within distribution chambers for even distribution. Various vanes and deflectors are pro- vided to direct the flow of particles within the apparatus. The method of uniformly distributing freely-falling particulate material over an area includes the steps of dis- tributing a flow of particles onto a pair of contrarotating squirrel-cage rolls so that part of the flow passes between the rolls and two other parts of the flow are deflected by the contrarotating squirrel-cage rolls. The three streams are then each delivered to one of three chambers having larger, more slowly rotating, squirrel-cage distribution rolls mounted therein for uniformly distributing the particles over an area.
