This invention is a technique for the susbtantially instantaneous self-healing of digital communications networks. Digital data streams from each of N nearby sources are combined and encoded to produce N+M coded data streams using a coding algorithm. The N+M coded data streams are then each transmitted over a separate long haul communications link to a decoder where any N of the N+M coded data streams can be decoded uniquely to produce the original N data streams. The original N data streams are then distributed to their respective separate end destinations. If any M or less of the N+M long haul communications links fails, i.e. as in a telephone line that gets cut or a long distance switch that fails, no rerouting of traffic need be done. Rather, the receiver detects loss of carrier on the failed link(s), and immediately supplies the missing data by decoding the data from the at least N remaining links. The technique overcomes a long felt problem of trying to reroute traffic by using sophisticated resource allocation techniques when a communications link fails.
Technique d'autodépannage essentiellement instantané de réseaux de transmission numériques. Des flux de données numériques provenant de chacune des N sources voisines sont combinés et codés afin de produire N+M flux de données codés au moyen d'un algorithme de codage. Les N+M flux de données codés sont ensuite transmis chacun sur une liaison de télétransmission distincte vers un décodeur où n'importe quel flux N des N+M flux de données codés peut être décodé uniquement pour produire les N flux de données d'origine. Les N flux de données d'origine sont ensuite acheminés vers leur destination terminale respective. Si tout M ou moins des N+M liaisons de télétransmission tombe en panne, p. ex. bris d'une ligne téléphonique ou panne d'un commutateur interurbain, il n'est pas nécessaire de réacheminer le trafic : le récepteur détecte la disparition du signal de la porteuse sur la (les) lignes en panne et fournit immédiatement les données manquantes en décodant les données provenant des au moins N liaisons qui restent. La technique règle le problème que posait depuis longtemps le réacheminement du trafic au moyen de techniques perfectionnées d'attribution des ressources lorsqu'une liaison de transmission tombe en panne.
