A scanning optical system is disclosed. The system consists of a spatial light modulator (18) with minimum diffraction effects that can be scanned line by line, a detector (32) appropriate to the application and appropriate optics (30, 28, 16). One application of such a system is in the infrared realm. The disclosure eliminates the need for a spinning mirror that is standard in infrared scanning systems. Another application is in photocopying. Using a line scanning device, such as a membrane deformable mirror device, eliminates the need for a moving light bar.
