2077350 9210568 PCTABS00013 A DNA which codes for a novel protein GIF which inhibits neurotrophic activity and which is present in the brain of a healthy man but is not in the brain of a patient with Alzheimer's disease has been cloned from a human cerebral cDNA library and a human genome DNA library. Escherichia coli has been transformed by a vector containing the cDNA integrated thereinto to express the GIF. The DNA which codes for a cloned GIF can be used in the genetic diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and a large amount of the GIF can be produced by expressing said DNA in a transformant.
