The invention provides a method for amplifying a signal during the detection of target nucleic acid molecules. A first sequence of primary oligonucleotide probe to the target nucleic acid molecules is hybridized. The primary probe has a means for binding to the bridging nucleic acid molecule, which can hybridize to a developer nucleic acid molecule. The primary probe is exposed to the bridging molecule and to a first developer molecule and a second developer molecule, under conditions where the bridging molecule binds to the primary probe and hybridizes to the first developer molecule, and the bound first developer molecule hybridizes to the second developer molecule to form a developer chain. One of the developer molecules is labelled, and the labelling can be detected in the developer chain.
