Docking stations, connectors, and adapters for carrying digital and analog signals to and from a media player are provided. The docking station can allow the media player to communicate with other media devices using multiple interfaces. Cable and wireless adapters can also allow the media player to communicate with other media devices using multiple interfaces. One aspect pertains to a connector that includes a housing and a plurality of spatially separated contacts mounted within the housing. A first set of contacts are directed at a first functionality and a second set of contacts are directed at a second functionality that is different than the first functionality. The digital and analog signals can be at specific locations on the connector in order to provide better operating characteristics.

Selon un autre aspect encore, on décrit un procédé de liaison sans fil entre le lecteur portatif et un autre dispositif. Le procédé comprend les étapes suivantes : sélection d'un élément multimédia sur ledit lecteur; sélection d'un ou plusieurs destinataires distants sur ce lecteur; et transmission de l'élément localement vers le lecteur en question, puis transmission sans fil aux destinataires distants sélectionnés. Selon un autre aspect enfin, le système de lecture multimédia est relié à un lecteur musical portatif qui comprend un émetteur pour la transmission de l'information sur liaison sans fil. L'émetteur peut transmettre au moins une séquence musicale continue à un ou plusieurs dispositifs de réglage personnels qui comportent chacun un récepteur capable de recevoir l'information depuis l'émetteur via la liaison sans fil.
