A security structure is defined for providing a measure of security against counterfeiting of valuable documents and for conveying information tactilely to a user. In one embodiment, the security structure is a laminate that includes a base layer and two outer layers bonded to opposite faces of the base layer. Each outer layer includes a plurality of apertures arranged in a preselected pattern. Each aperture, in conjunction with the portion of the base layer adjacent that aperture, defines a cavity. Each cavity and/or pattern of cavities are configured to convey information to a user through the user's sense of touch. A method of forming the laminate is also disclosed. The method includes bonding the two outer layers to the base layer and forming the apertures in the two sheets using a laser drill.
