ABSTRACT Disclosed is a hopper car having a longitudinally extending center sill with slope sheets within the car enclosing the center sill and extending downwardly and outwardly relative to the center sill and providing at their outer ends side dis- charge openings. A door is pivotally mounted at its upper end on the car for each discharge opening and the doors are movable outwardly from closed to open positions and each door has a keeper member on its lower end. The improved door locking and unlocking mechanism includes a support means on the car bridging the space between the slope sheets, and latch members are rotatably mounted on the support means adjacent to the ends of the slope sheets. Each of the latch members has keeper member engaging means in one rotated position engaging the respective keeper member in locked position. Actuating links each having a crank are connected to a respective latch member, and a shiftable longitudinally extending cam bar having at least one undulated cam surface is supported on the support means for longitudinal movement. Cam actuating means are connected to the actuating links and are engaged by the at least one surface cam during movement thereof to move the links generally transversely of the car and thus to rotate the latch members between locked and unlocked positions relative to the keeper member upon selective movement of the cam bar.
