The invention concerns a doped fibre optical amplifier for L-band (band ranging from about 1570 to 1610 nm) comprising a doped optical fibre (10) including a doped monomode core (16) and a sheath (18, 20), and optical pumping means (12) optically coupled with the doped fibre. The invention is characterised in that said sheath comprises an inner multimode sheath (18) and an outer sheath (20), the pumping signal being injected into the inner sheath (18), and the monomode core (16) is doped so as to induce a mean energy population inversion less than 50 % in the doped fibre, and preferably ranging between 35 % and 45 %. The invention is applicable to wavelength division multiplexing optical transmission systems.
