The invention provides a method for determining a dose and dosing schedule, and making dose adjustments of patients taking PBA prodrugs as nitrogen scavengers to treat nitrogen retention states, includ-ing ammonia accumulation disorders as well as chronic renal failure, by measuring urinary excretion of phenylacetylglutamine and/or total urinary nitrogen. The invention provides methods to select an appropriate dosage of a PBA prodrug based on the patient's dietary protein intake, or based on previous treatments administered to the patient. The methods are applica-ble to selecting or modifying a dosing regimen for a subject receiving an orally administered waste nitrogen scavenging drug, and to monitoring pa-tients receiving such drugs.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de déterminer une dose et un programme de dosage, et d'effectuer des réglages de dosage pour des patients prenant des promédicaments PBA tels que des épurateurs d'azote pour traiter des états de rétention d'azote, y compris des troubles d'accumulation d'ammoniac, ainsi que l'insuffisance rénale chronique, au moyen de mesures d'excrétion urinaire de phénylacétylglutamine et/ou d'azote urinaire total. L'invention concerne des procédés permettant de sélectionner un dosage approprié d'un promédicament PBA sur la base de traitements antérieurs administrés au patient. Les procédés sont applicables à la sélection ou à la modification d'un schéma posologique pour un patient recevant un médicament d'épuration d'azote résiduaire administré par voie orale, et à la surveillance de patients recevant de tels médicaments.
