ABSTRACT A double ended fluorescent lamp (10) having a relatively large diameter outer envelope (12) contains an assembly (18) of small diameter phosphor coated tubes (20, 22, 24) having arc directing means (26, 28) located at the ends of the tubes. Only two electrodes (38, 40) are employed, located at opposite ends of the lamp. A sinusoidal arc path is defined through the tubes and has an arc length that is greater than the length of the lamp. In the embodiment illustrated, the arc length is approximately 3 times the length of the lamp.
