ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The breakdown stress of electrical power cables can be increased by reducing the size of imper- fections in the insulation. Insulation, such as polyethylen can function at a stress of about 300 volts per mil if the imperfections are not of greater diameter than approximately 3 mils. Smaller imperfections increase the life of the cabl and a maximum size of 0.8 to 1 mil is the preferred embodi- ment. This invention preferably reduces the size of the imperfections by feeding the ultimate extruder with extru- ded tapes of about 3 mils or less in thickness, or by putting the insulation through a screen of a 3 mils, or less, mesh on its way to the extrusion die that applies the insulation.
