A pneumatic tube carrier for use with pneumatic tube systems includes first and second elongate shells disposed about a longitudinal axis and connected by a hinge, such that the shells are able to move between and open and closed position. A closure member includes at least one buckle member, a pivotable arm and a pair of springs adapted to maintain the arm and buckle member in a substantially vertical orientation with respect to the shells. The closure member prevents the insertion of the tube carrier into the pneumatic tube system, when the shell is in a non-secured or open position. Optionally, the tube carrier is provided with a seal around the exposed edge of one or both shells.
