ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hydraulic turbo-machine such as a Francis turbine is provided with a highly effective peripheral seal to greatly limit the quantity of water or other working liquid flowing past the outside of the runner, into the shroud space formed between the runner shroud and the runner housing. The seal comprises a double screw arrangement having a coarse thread, generally of rectangular section, projecting from an annular band of the runner shroud and a like thread, but of opposite hand, in projecting close facing relation therewith on the runner housing, the handing of the respective threads being related to the direction of rotation of the runner, to provide a seal possessing markedly low leakage flow charac- teristics. The arrangement is of particular value for use with machines having a low drag liquid contained within the shroud space. The effectiveness of the seal greatly reduces the rate of degradation of the low drag liquid by limiting the admission, as leakage, of working liquid to the shroud space.
