Abrégé Chaque colonne d'une presse comprend une tige d'âme (2) entourée à coulissement par un manchon (3). Le vérin de serrage (10) associé à la colonne considérée agit sur le plateau mobile (8) pour serrer le moule (11, 12). Le plateau supérieur (4) transmet la réaction au vérin auxiliaire (5-6) qui, prenant appui sur l'âme (2), applique au plateau (4) une force égale à celle développée par le vérin auxiliaire Ainsi le manchon n'est théoriquement soumis à aucun effort. Les vérins (9, 10) et (5-6) peuvent être alimentés en parallèle. Si celui de serrage (9-10) n'est pas co-axial à la colonne, on peut se contenter d'une solution approximative, ou bien utiliser comme vérin auxiliaire un vérin multiple en tandem, convenablement alomenté, ou bien détecter les déformations du manchon et commander le vérin auxiliaire de façon qu'il les annule.
