A double wrap brake band (10) for controlling the clutch drum of an automatic transmission for a vehicle is formed from an integrally stamped strap (12), the ends (26) of which ar joined to form the circular band. The strap includes longitudinal slots (18) and removable strap portions (32) forming three parallel straps (20, 22) which control the constriction and expansion of the band. A first bracket (14) is secured to the outer straps (22) and a second bracket (16) is secured to the intermediate strap (20) to facilitate control of the constriction/expansion movement. The brackets (14, 16) are secured to the straps (22, 20) such that brea- kage and malfunction are reduced.
