DOWN HOLE DRILL IMPROVEMENT ABSTRACT A fluid impact tool is disclosed of the type commonly known as a down-the-hole drill for drilling of rock. The improvement of the down hole drill herein described increases deep hole drill performance by accumulating piston return air in a traveling air pocket found on the piston. This effectively increases the piston front end volume so as to decrease the effect of the front end air cushion and thereby increase impact. This is particularly effective during operation with increased back pressure such as found in deep holes.
