The present invention relates to bypass valves for use in wellbores, particularly but not exclusively to bypass valves used during the setting of hydraulic anchor packers. A bypass valve (2) is provided with a piston (30) slidably mounted adjacent a body member (4) having at least one opening (20) extending therethrough. The piston (30) is moveable between a first position establishing a passage from the interior of the body (4) to the exterior thereof via the at least one opening (20) and a second position isolating the interior of the body (4) from the exterior thereof. Means are provided for increasing, in response to a predetermined fluid pressure differential across the length of the piston (30), the force exerted on the piston (30) by a given flow of fluid through the bypass valve (2) such that the resultant force on the piston (30) is insufficient to move the piston (30) to the second position. Thus, the bypass valve (2) is adapted to provide an indication at the surface of an imminent closure. Once said indication is received, the bypass valve (2) may be closed, without the need for remedial action, by simply increasing the rate of fluid flow.

Une soupape (2) de dérivation comprend un piston (30) coulissant, monté dans une position adjacente à une partie (4) du corps comprenant au moins une ouverture (20) traversante. Le piston (30) peut être déplacé entre une première position dans laquelle un passage est établi entre l'intérieur du corps (4) et l'extérieur de ce dernier via cette/ces ouverture(s) (20) et une seconde position dans laquelle l'intérieur du corps (4) est isolé de l'extérieur. Des moyens permettent, en réponse à un différentiel de pression prédéterminé du fluide dans la longueur du piston (30), d'augmenter la force appliquée sur le piston (30) par une vitesse de circulation donnée du fluide à travers la soupape (2), de manière que la force résultante appliquée sur le piston (30) soit insuffisante pour déplacer le piston (30) dans la seconde position. Ainsi cette soupape (2) de dérivation permet d'envoyer à la surface une indication d'une fermeture imminente. Lorsque cette indication est reçue, la soupape (2) de dérivation peut être fermée par une simple augmentation de la vitesse de circulation du fluide sans qu'il soit nécessaire de procéder à des actions compensatoires.
