Fluid flow in a natural gas well is stimulated by means of a downhole multi-stage rotary compressor (10) which is driven by an electric motor (6). Preferably the compressor shaft (9) is equipped with gas journal bearings (12), the motor is a brushless permanent magnet motor which is capable of operating at a speed above 5000 RPM and which directly drives the compressor shaft (9), and the production tubing (1) is thermally insulated by evacuated the surrounding annular space.
