A packer for sealing a space downhole in a well. The packer comprises a deformable sheath (16) having a body (22) and first and second ends (18, 20) for defining an interior volume (24) proximate a tool surface (12). A material located within the interior volume (24) is deformable, when the sheath second end (20) is moved toward the sheath first end (18), to move the deformable sheath (16) into the downhole space. The sheath (16) can function as a sealing element or a backup element, and can be applied to different structures and tool configurations downhole in a wellbore (32). For example, the packer can be applied to plugs, to through tubing mandrels, and to other well tools in open hole or cased wellbore configurations. The packer resists damage to the seal elements (48), provides confirmation of the packer setting force (F1), an d is less expensive than conventional packer designs.

L'invention concerne un joint de formation pour obturer un fond de trou spatial dans un puits. Le joint de formation comprend un gaine (16) déformable composée d'un corps (22) et d'une première et une seconde extrémité (18, 20), délimitant un volume intérieur (24) adjacent à une surface d'outil (12). Une matière comprise dans le volume intérieur (24) est déformable lorsque la seconde extrémité (20) de la gaine est déplacée vers la première extrémité (18) de gaine pour installer la gaine (16) déformable dans le fond de trou spatial du puits. La gaine (16) peut agir comme élément d'étanchéité ou comme élément de secours et peut être appliquée à différentes structures et configurations d'outils à l'intérieur d'un puits (32). Ainsi le joint de formation peut être appliqué à des bouchons, à des mandrins de tubage continus et à d'autres outils utilisés dans des conditions de fond, pour des configurations de puits avec trou en découvert ou de puits tubé. Le joint de formation permet d'éviter les dégâts causés aux éléments d'étanchéité (48) et de confirmer la force d'installation (F1) dudit joint de formation et est moins onéreux que les joints de formation de conception conventionnelle.
