A packoff assembly 10 for use in a wellbore includes a packer body 42, 43, and a packoff element 12, and a mandrel 40 each supported on the packer body. The packoff element supports a rigid formation ring 15 thereon, and extends continuously from above the rigid ring to below the rigid ring and acts to minimize an axial force required to set the packer assembly in the wellbore. Both the upper surface and the lower surface of the rigid ring may be tapered relative to a centerline of the packer body. According to the method of the present invention, the packer assembly may be reliably set in the wellbore by applying a relatively low axial force to the mandrel. This reduced axial force required to set the packer contributes substantially to the benefits of the packer assembly.
