An apparatus and method for pumping from a well. A pump includes a piston assembly reciprocably engaged in a cylinder assembly. A spring mechanism coupled to an anchor point above the piston assembly provides upward force on the piston assembly. The piston assembly is made to reciprocate to pump fluid. Reciprocation may be achieved by drawing an upper end of the spring member up and down or by applying and releasing pressure to a column of fluid above the pump.
