ABSTRACT A downhole heating generator (12) for oil wells which includes a housing ( 28 ) to interfit within a tube string (14) within an oil well bore (16). The housing (28) is of such a construction as to receive water and a heater (123 is formed therein by a pair of non-concentric electrodes (36) in spaced relation for heating the same o boiling or for vaporizing to steam. The electrodes (36) are energized through a surface mounted electrical transformer (38) and the heater (12) causes the water surrounding the electrodes (36) to boil and/or vaporize to steam to be directed to openings in said tube string (14) and to a geological formation adjacent said string.
