ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION Methods and means wherein a downhole reciprocating oil well pump powered by a source of pressurized fluid located at the well head receives fluid power via one tubing string and pumps liquid from the well through another tubing string, the downhole pump having internal means to vent gas and vapor from the pump chamber and to cause a pump stroke only when the pump chamber becomes filled with liquid. A plunger is arranged for forcing into the pump chamber through an annular seal ring, the plunger having a sealing surface for sealing cooperation with the seal ring that is harder than sand or the like which might be in the liquid to be pumped. The seal ring has a surface for sealing cooperation with the plunger that is harder than the plunger sealing surface. Sand will not cut the sealing surfaces during pressurization.
