Synthetic peptides are provided for effecting immunotherapy. The peptides have an amino acid sequence comprising at least a portion of the CDR3 region of a T-cell receptor and capable of eliciting a T-cell response, particularly an amino acid sequence encoded by a nucleotide sequence comprising the J-gene of the .alpha.-chain and/or .beta.-chain of the TCR. The peptides are particularly useful in suppressing an immune response to an antigen, particularly an allergenic antigen.
