The present invention provides a debris trap suitable for use with a water pipe in which water containing debris flows, particularly a downpipe (drainpipe) connected to an eaves trough (gutter). The invention provides a self-cleaning debris trap suitable for use with a substantially vertical downpipe having a discharge opening at a bottom end, the trap comprising a grid piece to be placed within or at the bottom end of the downpipe, thereby defining a chamber in the downpipe, the grid piece having holes which allow water and smaller debris which will not clog the discharge opening to flow through, while larger debris which would clog the discharge opening is retained, the grid piece being placed at such a position within or at the end of the downpipe that water flowing down the downpipe impacts the retained larger debris at a sufficient velocity and energy to effect erosion of the larger debris into smaller debris that will pass through the holes.
