ABSTRACT A mechanism that allows for the opening of any one drawer of a filing cabinet while causing the selective locking out of the remaining drawers of the filing cabinet is disclosed. The mechanism comprises a plurality of sliding members that are horizontally translatable between a retracted position and an extended position, and a series of rod members that are vertically translatable between a first position and a second position, with the sliding members and the rod members positioned so as to interact with one another. The rod members are used to block the movement of the sliding members from their respective retracted positions to their respective extended positions when a selected one of the sliding members is translated upon opening of a selected one of the drawers.
