ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus is disclosed for dressing of generally flat substrate such as leather from whose one surface protrude fibers. A first aqueous dispersion is applied on a structural support member having anti-adhesive properties. The aqueous dispersion is that of a synthetic plastics material. The aqueous dispersion is applied in an amount such that a solidified layer having a thickness of 0.07 to 0.22 mm is formed. Subsequently, a second aqueous dispersion is applied of synthetic plastics material in approximately the same amount onto the rough surface of the substrate or onto the solidified first dispersion layer. The substrate is then placed with its rough surface into the already solidified first dispersion of the synthetic plastics material, while the second dispersion is still in its wet stage. Eventually, the dressing, the substrate and the supporting member are compressed together and subjected to a vacuum treatment.
