A rotary drill bit for drilling a borehole in an earth formation is provided. The drill bit comprises a plurality of cutting elements (7, 9) arranged to cut a plurality of substantially circular, radially spaced cuts (22, 24, 26) into the bottom of the borehole, the cutting elements including at least one cutting/shearing element (7), each cutting/shearing element being arranged so as to cut into the bottom of the borehole at an angular interval behind another one of said cutting elements (9). A body of rock material (28) is defined between the trajectories of the cuts created by the cutting/shearing element and said other cutting element. The cutting/shearing element is provided with means for shearing-off said body of rock material in the direction of the cut created by said other cutting element.

Trépan rotatif servant à creuser un trou de forage dans une formation terrestre. Ce trépan est composé d'une pluralité d'éléments coupants (7, 9) conçus pour pratiquer une pluralité d'entailles (22, 24, 26) pratiquement circulaires et éloignées les unes des autres dans un sens radial au fond du trou de forage, ces éléments coupants comprenant au moins un élément coupant et cisaillant (7) dont chacun est conçu pour pratiquer des entailles au fond du trou de forage à intervalle angulaire derrière un autre desdits éléments coupants (9). Un corps de matériau rocheux (28) est défini entre les trajectoires des entailles créées par l'élément coupant et cisaillant et ledit autre élément coupant. L'élément coupant et cisaillant est pourvu de moyens servant à enlever par cisaillement ledit corps de matériau rocheux dans le sens de l'entaille créée par ledit autre élément coupant.
