A bearing element (42) for a rotary, earth boring drag bit (10) effectively reduces an exposure of at least one adjacent cutting (24) element by a readily predictable amount, as well as a depth of cut (DOC) of the cutter. The bearing element has a substantially uniform thickness across substantially an entire area thereof. The bearing element also limits the amount of unit force applied to formation so that the formation does not fail. The bearing element may prevent damage to cutters associated therewith, as well as possibly limit problems associated with bit balling, motor stalling and related drilling difficulties. The design and drilling methods include selecting a formation to be drilled, calculating a desired DOC and the strength of the formation, and calculating a height or thickness of a bearing element that may limit the DOC and the unit force applied to the formation.
La présente invention concerne un élément de palier pour un trépan de forage rotatif, qui réduit efficacement une exposition d~au moins un élément coupant adjacent d~une grandeur facilement prévisible, ainsi qu~une profondeur de coupe de ce dernier. L~élément de palier possède une épaisseur sensiblement uniforme sur sensiblement toute une surface. L~élément de palier limite également une force unitaire exercée sur une formation afin d~éviter sa rupture. L~élément de palier permet de prévenir un endommagement de coupe-tiges utilisés avec celui-ci tout en pouvant limiter des problèmes liés à un bourrage de trépan, un calage de moteur et des difficultés de forage connexes. L~invention concerne également des trépans comprenant les éléments de palier, des moules destinés à former ces éléments et des parties de corps de trépan portant ces éléments, des procédés de conception et de fabrication des éléments de palier et de trépans munis de ceux-ci, ainsi que des procédés de forage de formations souterraines. Les procédés de conception et de forage consistent à sélectionner une formation à forer, à calculer une profondeur de coupe voulue et la résistance de la formation, et à calculer une hauteur ou épaisseur d~un élément de palier pouvant limiter la profondeur de coupe et la force unitaire exercée sur la formation.
