2136726 9425722 PCTABS00034 A drill rig (10) which is equipped with one or more safety mechanisms (12) designed to prevent injuries to rig operators. In a first embodiment, the safety mechanism (12) includes a barrier (28) which is shiftably mounted to the rig (10) and surrounds the drilling tool when the barrier (28) is in the closed position. The barrier (28) includes a key member (22) which must be fitted into a sensor-equipped keyhole (50) in the rig (10) for the drilling tools to operate. A brake (64) may also be connected to the drill spindle (22) to stop rotation until the barrier (28) is closed. If the operator fails to actuate a disconnect switch (74) by shifting to a neutral position within a second predetermined time, a second delay timer (78) activates to shut off the engine (60). A brake (64) may also be connected between the spindle (22) and the delay timer (76) to prevent spindle rotation.
