A drill string including a tool joint having different inner diameters for a substantial axial length to provide enhanced strength in a threaded portion of the joint. A first drill pipe with a threaded box tool joint is welded to an upset portion thereof and a second drill pipe with a threaded pin tool joint welded to an upset portion thereof, with the threaded pin tool joint screwed into connection with the box tool joint. The first and second drill pipes include different outer and inner diameters. A wall thickness of the tool joint adjacent pin and threads is enhanced for providing increased torque strength of the connection.
