Abstract of The Disclosure A mechanical jar for releasing drill strings or tools stuck in a well bore is operable in a multiplicity of modes. Provision is made for enhancement or strengthening of the usual down-bumping action. Thus the tool can be used in a simple down-bumping mode as in the prior art or, by making use of a spring arrangement within the jar, this downwardly bumping action can be enhanced to deliver greater energy with each bumping stroke. The jar can also be used in conjunction with its unique latching mechanism to deliver a jarring blow upwardly after a predetermined loading has been applied thereto and, finally, again in conjunction with its latching mechanism, to deliver a jarring blow downwardly. The latching means and the means for releasing same are so designed that such wear as occurs during normal use does not result in triggering or release of the mechanism at less than the predetermined loadings required.
