Abstract A stabilizer element for a drill string has integral steel blades with preformed apertures into which are cold pressed plugs of hard material, some of the plugs having at least one diamond embedded therein and exposed at the outer surface thereof. Diamonds are preferably held in a plug matrix of tungsten carbide having a cooper-nickel-zinc alloy infiltrant, the plugs being formed in cylindrical molds between two rams.
