ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention provides a viscous, aqueous, alkaline drilling fluid, substantially free of clay, comprising a mixture of (a) 10-90 parts by weight of an addition polymer of an unsaturated carboxylic acid, the polymer having a molecular weight of 125,000-12,000,000, and (b) 10-90 parts by weight of a water soluble polysaccharide. The fluid may be used in amounts less than about 5 pounds per barrel (ppb) of 42 U. S. gallons of aqueous liquid as contrasted with 25-35 ppb of clay in conventional systems.
