A method of preventing or controlling the loss of well drilling fluid into the pores and fractures of subterranean rock formations by the addition of resilient graphitic carbon particles to the drilling fluid in sufficient amounts to plug the pores and fractures. The graphitic carbon material reduces loss of circulation, lowers torque and drag, prevents casing wear while drilling, and provides a new method for the controlled release of graphite at extreme pressure. The material is non-toxic and imparts the well-known lubricating properties of graphite without contributing to surface sheen development under US EPA offshore cuttings discharge rules.

Un procédé permet de prévenir ou limiter les pertes de fluide de forage de puits, dans les pores et les fractures des formations rocheuses souterraines, par l'adjonction au fluide de forage de particules souples de carbone graphitique en quantité suffisante pour obturer ces pores et fractures. Le carbone graphitique réduit les pertes de circulation, abaisse la friction et donc le couple, prévient l'usure du cuvelage pendant le forage et constitue une nouvelle possibilité de diffusion modulée du graphite sous pression extrême. Ce matériau est non toxique et confère les propriétés de lubrification bien connues propres au graphite sans contribuer à l'apparition d'irrisations de surface, conformément à la réglementation de l'agence de protection de l'environnement des Etats-Unis concernant les rejets marins de déchets de minage.
