A method of reducing formation breakdown during the drilling of a wellbore which method comprises: (a) circulating a drilling mud in the wellbore comprising (i) an aqueous or oil based fluid, (ii) at least one fluid loss additive at a concentration effective to achieve a high temperature high pressure (HTHP) fluid loss from the drilling mud of less than 2 ml/30 minutes and (iii) a solid particulate bridging material having an average particle diameter of 25 to 2000 microns and a concentration of at least 0.5 pounds per barrel; (b) increasing the pressure in the wellbore to above the initial fracture pressure of the formation such that fractures are induced in the formation and a substantially fluid impermeable bridge comprising the solid particulate bridging material and the fluid loss additive(s) is formed at or near the mouth of the fractures thereby strengthening the formation; (c) thereafter continuing to drill the wellbore with the pressure in the wellbore maintained at above the initial fracture pressure of the formation and below the breakdown pressure of the strengthened formation.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de limiter la rupture d'une formation pendant le forage d'un puits. Ledit procédé consiste: a) à faire circuler une boue de forage dans un puits comprenant i) un fluide aqueux ou à base d'huile, ii) au moins un réducteur de filtrat à une concentration efficace pour que la perte fluidique à partir de la boue de forage soit inférieure à 2 ml/30 minutes à une température et à une pression élevées (HTHP), et iii) un matériau particulaire de colmatage présentant une granulométrie moyenne comprise entre 25 et 2 000 microns et une concentration d'au moins 0,5 livres par baril; b) à augmenter la pression dans le puits au-dessus de la pression de fracture initiale de la formation de sorte que des fractures sont induites dans ladite formation et qu'un pont comprenant le matériau particulaire solide de pontage sensiblement imperméable au fluide et le ou les additif(s) sont formés au niveau ou à proximité de l'embouchure des fractures, ce qui renforce la formation; et c) à continuer de forer le puits dont la pression est maintenue au-dessus de la pression de fracture initiale de la formation et en-dessous de la pression rupture de la formation renforcée.
