ABSTRACT This invention relates to a novel disposable "drink through" cup lid used as a friction fit closure for open mouthed containers. The cup lid is provided with a central disc portion and a peripheral cavity portion which has an outer annular depending skirt for engagement with the cup rim. Two spaced apart notches are located on the lowermost extremity of the depending skirt within a quadrant of the cup lid. A pair of first and second fracture lines on the central disc portion extend interiorly of the disc from spaced apart points within the quadrant and which are in radial alignment with the notches. Alternatively, or in combination with the first and second fracture lines, a single fracture line can also be located within the central disc portion where it is substantially parallel to a chord described between the notches. The "drink through" or tear-away segment is removed by upward thumb pressure being applied between the notches.
