Simple and economical drive mechanisms for caulk dispensing devices that give a drip-stop release feature to improve control over the bead of caulk. A first embodiment includes a release lever encircling the plunger shaft and extending upwardly therefrom, and an elastic washer encircling the plunger shaft between the housing and release lever for frictional sliding therebetween. The release lever and washer ride forward on the plunger shaft while the trigger is retracted, and when the trigger is released the washer rides backward on the plunger shaft thereby driving the release lever until it engages the plunger shaft to prevent further retraction. In another embodiment, the floating washer and release lever are replaced by a first compression spring that is formed with a forward constricted end having increasingly tighter helical coils to frictionally grip the plunger shaft. Upon retraction of the trigger, the first grip drives the plunger shaft to overcome the friction of the constricted end of the first compression spring and the plunger shaft slides on through. Upon release the first gripping member and compression spring are able to retreat a bit until blocked by the frame. At that point the constricted end of the spring grips the plunger shaft and prevents further retraction, thereby cutting off the flow of caulk and providing a dripless release feature by relieving pressure in the cartridge upon initial release of the trigger.
