Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to the field of electronic watches utilizing liquid crystal displays and, more particularly, to means for illuminating such displays under poor ambient light conditions. In the present invention, the output from the oscillator, which conventionally drives the dividing and counting circuits of the timepiece, is also utilized to power the light source. The divider output is typically at a frequency of 8Hz, but frequencies in the range of from 3Hz to 100Hz may be used to drive the light source without noticeable degradation of the light output. By using a pulsed rather than continuous direct current, the power con- sumption is significantly reduced with the attendant advantage of extended battery life.
