ABSTRACT A drive for an electric rail traction vehicle including a motive rotatable driving rail wheel supported on an axle with a driven bull gear secured to drive the rail wheel, a pinion gear in driving mesh with the bull gear, a driving electric motor with a unitary housing having parts rigidly interconnected for the gears and motor with the motor having a central hollow shaft supporting a rotor and the pinion gear having a driving pinion shaft extending into the hollow center of the motor shaft and connected thereto with the motor shaft to drive the pinion shaft and the motor shaft and pinion shaft being coaxial with each other centered by a bushing and bearing supporting the pinion shaft.
