ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A stern drive is provided for a rear region of floatable vehicles, having a longitudinal axis, particularly amphibious vehicles having rear wheel means for travel of such vehicle on land whereas the stern drive is applicable during travel in water, comprising: a drive motor stationarily associated with the vehicle; at least one propeller located in the rear region of the vehicle; at least one stationary power take-off operatively connected with the drive motor; and drive elements for operatively connecting a respective power take-off with a respective propeller, the drive elements being supported on the vehicle so as to be adjustable in a vertical plane which is at least approximately parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, the drive elements making possible a change of position of said at least one propeller, in a vertical direction, by a multiple of the diameter of the at least one propeller being located thereby between an upper retracted position in the rear region as protected against damage during land travel thereof and a lower position wherein such propeller can be brought as far as into a water depth where water incident flow reaching the propeller is beyond any disadvantageous influence by any vehicle parts during travel thereof in water thereby to obtain a deep adjustment capability of the driven propeller being brought into relatively dense water so that for this reason and also because of wake/rear-wave-generation decreasing considerably therewith there results increased efficiency thereof during travel in water.
