The invention relates to a drive spindle (1) for the main drive of a roll stand, comprising: a first shaft (3) for transmitting a torque from a drive motor (2) to a coupling element, particularly to a splined profile, and; a second shaft (5) for transmitting the torque form the coupling element, particularly from the splined profile, over a rotating joint (4) to a roll (6) of the roll stand. The rotating joint (4) has a coupling sleeve (7), which is rotationally fixed to the roll (6), and has a second spindle head (8), which is rotationally connected to the second shaft (5). The rotating connection between the coupling sleeve (7) and the spindle head (8) is established by sliding blocks and by a journal (9), which is connected in a rotationally fixed manner to the spindle head (8), however, it is mounted so that it permits a tilting angle (a) between the rotation axis (10) of the roll (6) and the rotation axis (11) of the second shaft (5). In order to be able to transmit, in an improved manner, axial forces through the rotating joint, the invention provides that a bearing element (12, 13) for absorbing forces in the direction of the axes of the second shaft (5) and shaft (6) is placed between the coupling sleeve (7) and the spindle head (8). A ram (14) for transmitting axial forces between the coupling sleeve (7) and the spindle head (8) is placed between both bearing elements (12, 13).
