18 ABSTRACT A rail vehicle has a drive system with two or more d.c. drive motors (M1, M2, M3) and with means (SRA) for common control of the armature currents (UA) of the motors. Futher, the system has means (SRF1, SRF2, SRF3) for individual control of the fields of the motors. The system further comprises two comparison means which generate differences between the armature currents of the motors. These differences control the fields in the respective motor so that the armature current in each motor can be controlled separately. Further, the system includes a logic unit to the input of which there are supplied a measured signal, which indicates the armature current intensity of the motor for the axle which has the best adhesion, usually the trailing axle motor, as well as an amplification signal. These two signals are multiplied by each other and the product signal is used in a loadsharing system to control the other motors such that the torque of the trailing axle motor is reduced, the trailing axle then rolling very close to ground speed. This speed is used as a measure of the true speed, which controls an overspeed feedback control system, which in turn controls the system for loadsharing such that the vehicle can be controlled to maximum tractive effort without torsional oscillations.
