ABSTRACT The self-propelled rotary lawn mower has rear drive wheels and front support wheels and an engine driving a rotary cutter blade mounted inside the housing. A transmission is mounted on the housing and has an input shaft and an output shaft driven by the engine through a belt drive to the transmission input shaft. The transmission output shaft extends across the mower and has, on each end, a drive gear driving an internal ring gear mounted in the drive wheel. The transmission includes a clutch between the input and output shafts. The clutch has multiple drive and driven plate sets immersed in lubricant, and a control for moving the plate sets into engagement to cause lubricant to be expelled and the plates to lock up to transmit power from the input shaft to the output shaft.
