Abstract of the Disclosure A stitching machine head includes a former for forming a length of wire into a staple and a drive bar reciprocal along a drive stroke and a return stroke and first and second couplers coupling the former to the drive bar, the first coupler coupling the former and the drive bar together during an initial portion of the driving stroke to form the staple wire and decoupling the drive bar from the former during a later portion of the drivingn stroke to drive the staple through an associated workpiece. The second coupler includes a pin carried by the former and spring-biased into frictional engagement with a coupling surface on the drive bar having a recess therein. The pin engages in the recess at the end of the drive stroke and couples the former to the drive bar during an initial portion of the return stroke, after which the former is stopped and the pin cams out of the recess for decoupling the drive bar from the former during the last part of the return stroke.
