The Drover's License Alert System (DLAS) is intended to alert police officers that an individual who is not in possession of a valid driver's license is operating a motor vehicle. A pre-requisite for the DLAS is the issue of driver's licenses with a magnetic strip encoded with information that can be used by the system to determine the validity of the license and the expiry date. The DLAS as installed in the motor vehicle comprises a card reader that can accept data from the magnetic strip on the license and a Central Processing Unit (CPU), with or without Programmable Read-Only Memory (PROM), interconnected with the vehicle's emergency/hazard lighting system. The emergency/hazard lighting system is activated by default by the vehicle's ignition system until such time as a driver's license is read into the DLAS, verified by the CPU and PROM, and then de-activated by a signal from the DLAS. The vehicle's emergency/hazard lighting system will thus alert the police to the possibility that a motor vehicle is being driven by someone who does not possess a valid driver's license. The DLAS will not interfere with the use of the emergency/hazard lighting system as a distress signal.
